Virginia is for Food and Farm Freedom Lovers

Virginians are not taking lightly the NGOs environmentalist assaults on their land and the right to farm. They are fighting back with the Virginia Small Farm and Food Freedom Resolution in support of the Farm and Food Freedom Act. (www.vafarmandfoodfreedom.com)

Many Virginians testified in Richmond in support of HB1430, The Right to Farm Act, better known as the Boneta Bill, which passed the House of Delegates 77-22 in February 2013 but was blocked by the Senate Agricultural Committee by a vote of 11-4. Delegate Scott Lingamfelter promised to reintroduce the bill next year.

Virginians have vowed to continue the fight. Chairman Mike Thomas and his committee of 12 proposed a resolution on May 4, 2013 to be included and published on the Republican Party of Virginia website with a link on the home page.

It remains to be seen if any of the parties and members of Congress represent the wishes of the majority of the people anymore. Would lawmakers continue to pass laws just to protect the loudest minorities, the illegals, those on welfare, and the elites in power?

The Resolution calls on the Republican Party of Virginia to “support state legislation and local ordinances consistent with each farmer’s right to determine what best constitutes farming, farm life, the best uses of his/her own farm land, respect for their neighbors,” market pay for their labor, and to repeal state laws and ordinances inconsistent with the Resolution.

The Governor and the General Assembly have a duty to advance legislation in 2014 that respects the rights of citizens to pursue their self-interests as protected by the Constitution of the United States, the vision of the Founding Fathers, and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Farmers engage in more than just production agriculture, they have the right to commerce, the right to enjoyment of their land, assembly on their property, the right to exercise religious freedom on their lands, the right to grow, eat, sell their locally produced foods without burdensome local and state government regulations or dictates from environmental groups sponsored by international groups and entities, including the United Nations ICLEI.

Government should not use laws, regulations, zoning ordinances, or cumbersome and expensive permits to violate or trespass on the farmers’ rights and freedom to farm under the guise that they know what is best for farming in general or one farmer in particular.

Government agencies or subdivisions that violate farmers’ rights and trespass on their property should be made accountable for their deeds. Americans should not be treated as guilty until proven innocent while giving environmental groups unlimited power without much redress for small farmers who do not have the means to fight back and must shut down their farming operations and farm stores as was the case of Martha Boneta in Virginia and many others across the country.

Less than three percent of American labor feeds 306 million Americans yet the government is making it harder and harder for small farms to operate and bring wholesome foods to the market. Why should farmers be subjected to “annual property monitoring visits and inspections” by environmental groups funded by U.N. Agenda 21 agencies and pursued by groups beholden to ICLEI and other environmental councils who have no idea how their food gets to the table nor do they care? Are “penny loafer farmers” and their horses the only Americans protected under the law? Don’t real farmers deserve the same protection under the supreme law that guarantees all Americans unalienable rights such as “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?”

Is Carbon Dioxide Guilty and Global Warming Settled Science?

If you ask the global warming alarmists, scientists with a liberal agenda who hide and delete research data to fit their talking points, corrupt third world countries that run the United Nations, and the globalist proponents of UN Agenda 21, the answer is yes.

If you ask students brainwashed into the environmental worship of Mother Earth, investors who stand to make a fortune from selling carbon swaps, Hollywood know-it-alls, and bureaucrats who charge carbon taxes, the answer is yes.

If you ask corporations and countries like Brazil who profit from pushing biofuels (ethanol and DieselMaxx), the EPA, those green on the outside and red on the inside who want to bankrupt the coal industry, those who want energy prices to skyrocket, and those who receive huge government grants and subsidies to profit from expensive wind and solar energy, the answer is yes.

If you ask real and honest scientists, 100 of whom took a full-page ad in the Washington Post to denounce the global warming hoax, the protesting people around the globe who are starving or paying much higher prices for their daily food staple, corn, that is now being turned into ethanol, and if you carefully read the evidence and recent scientific data that is not doctored or manufactured, the answer is no.

If the much maligned CO2, a plant nutrient, is so bad for the planet, why do greenhouse growers buy CO2 generators to accelerate the growth and size of their plants? The generators are made in the U.S. and run on propane and natural gas, turning fossil fuels into CO2.

A recent study showed that a slight rise in CO2 levels of the atmosphere has actually helped re-green deserts, accelerating the growth of trees, shrubs, and grasses which produce oxygen. The American Geophysical Union concluded that it was the “fertilizer” effect of CO2 increasing vegetation cover by 8 percent in the last 28 years (1982-2010). Researchers adjusted for potential changes from rain, air temperature, sunlight, and land use. http://www.agu.org/news/press/pr_archives/2013/2013-24.shtml

Nobody can make pronouncements with 100 percent accuracy but it does not stop global warming proponents to say that they are 100 percent sure that man-made CO2 production since the industrial age began is the only culprit for global warming. How can they be so sure? It is the accepted “consensus” of like-minded globalists, not incontrovertible facts. The science of man-made global warming is based on “consensus” and biased computer modeling. http://news.investors.com/ibd-editorials/060413-658776-study-shows-co2-rise-is-causing-deserts-to-get-greener.htm

“The data doesn’t matter. We’re not basing recommendations on the data. We’re basing them on the climate models, said Professor Chris Folland of the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research. http://www.c3headlines.com/global-warming-quotes-climate-change-quotes.html

“The models are convenient fictions that provide something very useful,” said Dr. David Frame, climate modeler at Oxford University. http://www.green-agenda.com/

“No matter if the science of global warming is all phony… climate change provides the greatest opportunity to bring about  justice and equality in the world, said Christine Stewart, former Canadian Minister of the Environment. (Stewart, Christine. Calgary Herald, December 14, 1998)

Alan Siddons and Joe D’Aleo call carbon dioxide the “Houdini of Gases.” They wrote on September 5, 2007 that studies compiled by geologist Tom Segalstad show “earth’s biological and chemical processes recycle CO2 within a decade,” contradicting United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) conclusion that carbon dioxide remains in the air for up to 200 years. “A CO2 molecule you’re exhaling at the moment is bound to be captured by a plant or a rock or the ocean just a few years from now.” http://www.ilovemycarbondioxide.com/pdf/Carbon_Dioxide_The_Houdini_of_Gases.pdf

Global warming alarmists always murky the waters by interchanging “climate” with “weather.” They are two different concepts. It is self-evident that over millions of years, the earth’s climate has changed independent of human activity, due to solar activity, solar flares, cloud cover, ice cap melts, refreezes, and direction of oceanic currents. Catastrophic weather events have occurred prior to the industrial revolution when human activity could not be connected in any way to earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, droughts, and floods.

Professor of Climate Science and chair at Macquarie University, Australia, Dr. Murry Salby, the author of the book “Physics of the Atmosphere and Climate,” said that man-made CO2 is not the driver of atmospheric CO2 or climate change. Satellite observations show the highest levels of CO2 present over non-industrialized regions, e.g., the Amazon, not over industrialized regions. Ninety-six percent of CO2 emissions are from natural sources, only 4 percent is man-made.  http://www.climatedepot.com/2013/06/10/climate-scientist-dr-murry-salby-explains-why-man-made-co2-does-not-drive-climate-change/

Dr. Salby said in his speech in Hamburg, April 18, 2013, “IPCC [temperature prediction] models have no predictive skill.” In other words, global temperature is not controlled exclusively by CO2, there are other important variables such as cloud cover, solar activity, solar flares, oceanic currents that the IPCC modeling did not take into account. http://www.kaltesonne.de/?p=10877

Dr. Klaus Kaiser explained in his article, “Pushing Back on Misinformation,” that there is no such thing as “carbon pollution” or “carbon dioxide pollution.” Carbon is an essential element of anything organic and carbon dioxide is necessary for plant life on earth.

As he points out, if atmospheric concentration of CO2 should drop from 0.04% to 0.02% (most bureaucrats and environmental groups demand to cut CO2 emissions in half – perhaps they could hold their breath or genetically engineer a non-flatulent cow), “it would be insufficient to sustain photosynthesis in most plants. Without growing plants, the bottom of the food-chain would disappear.”

Dr. Kaiser also discredits the theory of “greenhouse gas that traps heat” that had been proven a false hypothesis a hundred years ago but “resurrected in the 1970s by interest groups who saw it as a convenient means to exert control over energy sources.”
http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/56183

Larry Bell encapsulated the true agenda of the maligned carbon dioxide and the global warming proponents in his Forbes article, How Many Things You Do Today Will Kill You Or The Planet? http://www.forbes.com/sites/larrybell/2013/06/25/how-many-things-you-do-today-will-kill-you-or-the-planet/2/

-          Control by environmentalists such as the World Wildlife Fund and Sierra Club (The polar bear population they claimed, unlikely to survive, has made a miraculous recovery. Emperor penguins in Antarctica are going to survive as well and have doubled in population.)

-          Wind power (too expensive and only suitable for a few locations; chops up quite a few birds; the darling of liberals as long as the ugly and noisy windmills are not installed in their own back yards)

-          Solar power (also expensive and inefficient at night when we need it most; I might add that it needs lots of surface land to deploy the panels, land which is better suited for agriculture)

-          Maurice Strong and his 1992 Rio Summit with his UN Agenda 21, “centralized control of every aspect of human life: energy use, water use, housing and stock allocation, population levels, public health, dietary regimens, resources and recycling, social justice and education”

I realized how widespread and powerful the hoax of global warming is when I saw the words of one my favorite fiction writers, Michael Crichton, who described the environmentalist Gaia religion. “We are energy sinners, doomed to die, unless we seek salvation, which is now called sustainability. Sustainability is salvation in the church of the environment, just as organic food is its communion, that pesticide-free wafer that the right people with the right beliefs imbibe.”

Zoning Laws, Conservation Easements, and the Right to Your Land

I believe so strongly that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) pursue the path to confiscate land from American landowners and farmers under the guise of zoning laws, environmental preservation, and eminent domain that I wrote about Martha’s Plight and her Liberty Farm in my book, “U.N. Agenda 21: Environmental Piracy.” http://www.amazon.com/U-N-Agenda-21-Environmental-ebook/dp/B009WC6JXO/ref=tmm_kin_title_0

Martha’s 70 acre farm is located in Fauquier County, a rural community not far from Washington, D.C. The rich soil is ideal for growing grapes and agriculture in general. Martha bought her farm with an agricultural conservation easement.

A conservation easement is a contract between a private property owner and a land trust. Conservation easements are signed because some people want to protect their property from unwanted development in the future but they also want to retain ownership of the land. The donation of an easement to a land trust may give financial advantage to the donor.  The conservation easement is passed on to any future owners of that land.

Martha Boneta repaired the historical barn, built an apiary, harvested hay, grew herbs, and rescued 165 animals, sold chicken, duck, turkey, emu eggs, candles made from beeswax, birdhouses, and fiber from llamas and alpacas. Although holding a business license, she was harassed, the license was not renewed, and a trench was dug to prevent parking on her property because it obscured the view shed.

Piedmont Environmental Council decided to rezone her property for alleged “violations” found during unannounced inspections. They settled the law suit in 2011.

The Fauquier County Board of Supervisors changed the zoning laws to ban Martha’s sale of fruits, vegetables, beverages, and other crafts in her farm store. The supervisors also passed an ordinance to force wineries in the area to close at 6 p.m. and to prohibit the sale of food unless the wineries obtained special permits from the zoning administrator.

Martha put a lot of hard work to breathe life into the previously abandoned property. It was her life-long dream to farm. She was not going to give up that easily. She became a property rights advocate and activist in Virginia, speaking at every venue and opportunity against the insidious U.N. Agenda 21, enabled at the local level by unscrupulous supervisors who had bought into the Agenda 21 environmental land grab.

The “visioning committee consensus” of ICLEI was nothing more than the wishes of a few global elites, telling each community across the country what was best for their citizens in terms of land and water use, keeping the environment as pristine and wild as possible, without the “destructive” encroachment of humans. As Americans became more aware of their true internationalist intent, ICLEI changed its name to Local Governments for Sustainability.

The International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) is a conglomerate of national, regional, and local government associations who promote “sustainable development” and protection of the environment because of the man-made global warming that does not exist. The focus is to limit economic and agricultural development in developed countries, a forced sustainable de-growth through EPA regulations and local board of supervisors’ zoning laws, and “regionalism” at the federal level, intruding on every facet of human life. http://www.icleiusa.org/

A lot of Virginians testified in support of HB1430 (The Boneta Bill), The Right to Farm Act, which passed the House of Delegates 77-22 in February 2013 but was blocked by the Senate Agricultural Committee by a vote of 11-4. Delegate Scott Lingamfelter promised to reintroduce the bill next year.

Martha’s source of trouble at the local level during 2009-2011 was Fauquier County zoning supervisor Peggy Richardson, who was IRS commissioner under President Bill Clinton.

It must have been absolute coincidence that Martha’s tax returns for 2010 and 2011 were audited by the IRS. This was the timeframe when her farm operations were dissected and her legal battles ensued. Martha Boneta believes that it was a “coordinated effort” to confiscate her farm through rezoning.

Zoning supervisor Richardson told TheWatchdog.org, “I could understand, given the external climate, that people might think there is something amiss. I think that’s a stretch, but I understand why people might feel this way. Coincidences do happen.” http://watchdog.org/91068/former-irs-commissioner-says-tax-audit-of-virginia-farmer-a-coincidence/

Martha wrote, “IRS came with a camera to the farm but I do not know what was photographed.  The IRS agent watched me put freshly harvested eggs into cartons and feed emus. Asked me about "boarding" farm caretakers -- very odd and unusual especially since ‘boarding’ a farm caretaker is identical to what PEC (Piedmont Environmental Council) complained and sued me over. Particularly odd since there is nothing in my (tax) return that has anything to do with ‘boarding’ labor for example.”

Joseph Farah writes that Margaret “Peggy” Richardson “was in charge when I exposed Clinton’s political abuse of the IRS. She was forced to resign and now she is on the Piedmont Environmental Council.”
http://www.wnd.com/2013/06/i-hate-coincidences/#8L0Ov7YSR5UiJVYB.99

If you think Martha Boneta’s case is an isolated incident of “conservation easement,” think again. Take for instance the case in Alameda County, California. The deceptively named Measure D, “Save Agriculture and Open Space Lands Initiative,” pushed by Oakland mayor Jerry Brown and the Sierra Club passed in November 2000. Most ranchers had no idea what they voted for - the restrictive use of thousands of acres of private land by the county.

Property owners lived on the land but could not make any changes or improvements to it without prior approval by the Board of Supervisors. Ranchers paid taxes on 100 percent of the land but could only develop 2 percent.

Chuck Moore, owner of Graceland Equestrian Center, petitioned during a hearing on January 8, 2013, to expand a covered area on his property to store hay for his horses.

The Sierra Club objected by stating that “The Board has a free hand to further restrict the use of land but it does not have a free hand to loosen the restrictions measuredly imposed on the development and use of land.” They insisted that “open space must be saved,” which begs the question, “Saved from what? Horses?”

The Supervisor, seeking to avoid litigation, suggested an insane solution. The rancher should purchase more property and donate it to the Sierra Club as “open space.”

The narrator asked pointedly, “Are we a nation that respects private property and individual rights or are we slaves to the government and special interest groups like the Sierra Club?”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYMmePre-VI

This question can be easily answered by perusing the Draft International Covenant on Environment and Development (DICED). It is the Environmental Constitution of Global Governance. The Draft Covenant’s 79 articles, described in great detail in 242 pages, take Sustainable Development principles described in U.N. Agenda 21 and transform them into global law, which supersedes all constitutions including the U.S. Constitution. https://docs.google.com/gview?url=http://www.uncsd2012.org/rio20//content/documents/IUCN+Intl+Covenant+on+Env+and+Dev+EPLP-031-rev3.pdf&embedded=true
Martha Boneta’s and Chuck Moore’s battles are two examples of thousands across the country who are fighting their local zoning czars for economic freedom, the use of their land, property rights free of intrusive, photographed, unauthorized, and illegal, often in the middle of the night land and home inspections, and the freedom to engage in unencumbered agricultural activities from environmental groups funded by wealthy globalists who would rather see humans disappear or moved into government approved urban ghettoes or zones where they can be better controlled and corralled.

Rroma and U.S. Illegal Immigration

I have Latino friends who fancy themselves conservatives, even Republicans. But when it comes to illegal immigration, they are rabid Democrats. Any curtailing of illegal crossing of our porous borders, breaking our laws in the process, or discussion of voter ID becomes racism, discrimination, profiling, and sheer hatred.

The Latino lobby is quite powerful not just among our elected officials in Washington who want to cling to power by pandering to higher donors and loud non-English speaking groups, but also in the boardrooms of large and small corporations alike who want cheap labor and no employee healthcare costs to comply with Obamacare. Democrats cannot wait to have 11 million more low information voters without English skills who will vote Democrat in perpetuity. Who can resist Santa Claus?

The pressure is on to pass amnesty immediately for 11 million illegal aliens, “undocumented Americans in the shadows” at Seven Elevens, gas stations, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, the welfare office, the Social Security, WIC, EBT offices, ERs, shopping malls, in churches, and wherever else there is a way to milk the system and get free stuff from the “stupidly-generous gringos.”

The Multiculturalism agenda has warped the minds of many indoctrinated Americans into believing the talking points of the progressive lobby. They are now willing to destroy their economy, their language, their borders, their culture, and drive the last nail in the coffin of what used to be a country of freedom where immigrants fled to for freedom from oppression, equal opportunity to succeed, to build, and to create, not to become burdens to the welfare system.

Europeans are suffering the full-blown effects of this failed multiculturalism which we are now eagerly emulating. Germany and France are awake, albeit too late, recognizing that the multiculturalism they embraced with open arms and instant generous welfare has caused irreparable damage to the fabric of their society. Many towns and areas are no longer recognizable as France/Germany; they are forbidden ghettos, miniature countries the immigrants left behind. Which begs the question, why did they emigrate from a hell hole and established an exact replica in a western nation?

Der Spiegel, an independent publication from Hamburg, which employs 80 fact checkers, whom the conservative Franz Josef Strauss called “the Gestapo of our time” and the Social Democrat Chancellor Willy Brandt called “Scheissblatt,” published an interesting story, “The Rroma Conundrum.” Oezlem Gezer’s article was fascinating for many reasons. The story bears some resemblance to our illegal immigration and its consequences.

The local council of the Berlin Neukoelln district sent an envoy to a small Romanian village of 3,000, populated by Rroma, formerly known as gypsies. This district has an irritating problem of their own creation, 300,000 residents of 160 nationalities. Half of the students attending the 65 schools in the district have no knowledge of German nor an interest in acquiring language skills any time soon. Gezer describes how “large Rroma families move en masse from one village in Romania to Neukoelln and fill up an entire street.”

Giffey, the Ph.D. local council representative said, “I open a new school class every month,” surely the Romanian locals are missing their Rroma children. Who can blame the population who has migrated to Berlin and those who are planning on migrating when the welfare benefits in Germany are twenty times as generous as those given by Romanian authorities?  Since Romania became a member of the European Union in 2007, any citizen can travel freely across the borders of the 27 EU member countries and seek work. The Rroma, Gezer said, “form closed microcosms,” similar to the villages they’ve left behind, moves “which go unnoticed by politicians until it’s too late.”

It is easy to pick on the Rroma because they have neither a powerful representation nor a vociferous lobby. Many lead a nomadic life and self-marginalize. They marry early in life and most do not attend school regularly. The communist regime marginalized them to an extent and the efforts to include them in society have failed miserably.

Rroma speak Rromani (romani ćhib), language variations belonging to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European languages. Confused with Egyptians, hence the word “gypsy,” they actually migrated about 1,500 years ago from the northwestern Indian subcontinent. “They arrived in Europe from the Middle East in the 15th century, separating from the Dom people” and settled across Central and Eastern Europe, Spain, Portugal, and southern France.

Rroma have migrated to the United States in the 19th century. There are one million Rroma in the U.S. and 800,000 in Brazil. The Rroma in Brazil are descendants from Rroma deported by the Portuguese government during the Inquisition. There are Rroma in Canada and in some South American countries.

The Berliners are upset because most Rroma children are not immunized, creating health issues that had been previously eradicated:  rubella, whopping cough, tuberculosis, chicken pox, and measles. Some of the Rroma children have AIDS. “Mayors in Romania are glad to see their Rroma residents go.”

“The representative from Switzerland says his country has no problems with integration: Rroma come over during the day to beg, then travel back to France to sleep.” They are “rotating Europeans,” as a Bulgarian diplomat called them. The French stopped repatriating the Rroma. It was expensive and they always came back, thanking the French President for their free vacation home. http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/a-trip-to-romania-offers-unsettling-answers-to-roma-influx-a-905155.html

The officials described the tripling of Romanians in Germany to 205,000, as a challenge - they are either well educated or very poor. It was hard for me to believe that such a small number posed “the greatest challenge for German integration policies.” No mention was made of the millions of Middle Eastern and North African Muslims who have set up ghettoes and mosques across the EU and Germany, thanks to the generous welfare system and the multicultural self-suicidal immigration policies.

EU has built a cultural center and daycare in the Rroma village, with bathrooms donated by Britain – neither is used for lack of operating costs. The EU’s blue flag with yellow stars, a symbol of the freedom to move from country to country without being stopped at the border, represents for these Rroma immigrants the freedom to escape to the country that offers the most generous welfare benefits for life.

Here we are about to repeat the same mistake of 1986 when we amnestied 3 million illegal aliens and the mistake the European Union has made by allowing progressives to overwhelm the member countries with unchecked immigration in the name of religious tolerance and non-discrimination.

Margaret Thatcher’s prophetic words have now come true for Europeans. “The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” Bureaucrats are finding out how difficult it is to scale back the largesse given to millions of foreign nationals who hate them, refuse to integrate, refuse to speak the national language, self-separate in ghettoes, and are biting the hands that feed them quite well by demanding more and promising to take them over by violent means or by exploding demographics. Europeans no longer have enough children to replace the dying population, while the immigrants average 6-8 children per family. At this rate, it is easy to see how the generous hosts will be replaced in a few generations by the hordes of unchecked immigrants.

We are a few days away from the passage of the Comprehensive Immigration Bill, an amnesty that Marco Rubio and the Gang of Eight are pushing very hard, responding to the wishes of corporations who want cheap labor and of Americans who want 11 million new Democrat voters. Progressives, business groups, donors, software billionaires such as Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg strongly support the bill in spite of the fact that average wages, education levels, and employment will be depressed for at least ten years. http://dailycaller.com/2013/06/23/sessions-border-surge-amendment-doesnt-require-surge/#ixzz2X6RvkHLt

1.      Granting amnesty encourages more illegal immigration.

2.      Trillions will be spent on government benefits for those receiving amnesty.

3.      The border will not be secured.

4.      The national debt crisis and out-of-control spending will balloon.

5.      The already bloated bureaucracy will have to be expanded to accommodate amnesty.

6.      DHS receives new powers.

7.      Four million legal immigrants are still waiting on the resolution of their cases.

8.      States cannot meet their local needs.

9.      Pork projects are included in the 1,190 page Immigration Bill such as special treatment for Alaskan seafood processing and $1.5 billion for youth job training.

10.  Worst of all, it promotes dependence on government.

Do the Washington power elites care that hard-working Americans will have to pay trillions of dollars in welfare costs and will have to accept lower wages in the process? Do they care that the borders must be enforced because Americans are not safe from further unwanted invasion of illegal aliens? Judging by the fact that lawmakers want amnesty first and foremost and have no desire to build the border fence for which funds have been approved and appropriated long time ago, the answer is no.

Valuable Lessons at the National Museum of American History

I am always amazed how much I can learn from a museum trip if I really pay attention. The throngs of young Americans within are too hurried, carefully herded, and happy-to-be-out-of-school noisy to really learn from the exhibits. There is certainly no time to compare the items on display and the museum’s stories behind them to the “facts” taught in school in American History classes.

The National Museum of American History, located in the Kenneth E. Behring Center, is “devoted to the scientific, cultural, social, technological, and political development of the United States.” The 3 million artifacts of American history and culture occupy floors which house the famous Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired our national anthem, Washington’s uniform, Thomas Jefferson’s lap desk, and other war, political, and cultural memorabilia.
http://americanhistory.si.edu/

I found my 1950 teal stove and oven in the museum. My kids always told me how outdated my kitchen was but I loved this stove that had cooked meals for 55 years for two families and was still operational when I replaced it in 2008 with a modern version. The European in me did not want to discard something that was built to last, all chrome and stainless steel.

Our love affair with travel and on the go eating and drinking was expressed in the vast collection of disposable containers and lids, “lids on the go.”

My first typewriters on which I learned dactylography were in the museum – the Remington manual and the IBM Selectric. I really thought I had arrived when our Dean bought several IBM Selectric typewriters with the approval of the communist party, and we were allowed to learn how to use them in a lab in my first year of college.

I found Grandma’s beautiful turn of the century pedal operated Singer sewing machine. She has created and sewn, without the benefit of a pattern, many wedding gowns, dresses, and suits on this machine – she was the village seamstress, a highly sought-after profession.

Julia Child’s kitchen was on full display with all the utensils, countertops, pots and pans, and dishes that the famous chef had used during her lifetime of television cooking, teaching generations of American women the fine art of French cuisine.

Few knew that Julia Child was also an American spy, hired in the summer of 1942 at OSS, the intelligence agency created by President Franklin Roosevelt as the first centralized U.S. intelligence operation. After initial clerical work, Julia worked directly for OSS Director William Donovan. It was a time when we truly spied on enemies like the Nazis and the communists, not patriotic Americans.

The records of 24,000 former OSS employees had been declassified including Julia Child, John Hemingway, son of Ernest Hemingway, Kermit Roosevelt, son of President Theodore Roosevelt, historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr., Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, major league catcher Moe Berg, actor Sterling Hayden, and Miles Copeland, father of Stewart Copeland, drummer for the band The Police. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/26186498/ns/us_news-security/t/julia-child-cooked-double-life-spy/

The main entrance of the museum displayed temporarily a beautiful red and blue Conestoga Wagon, a white tarp-covered wagon that helped settlers survive by carrying goods over the Allegheny Mountains to the western frontier and then return to Philadelphia and Baltimore laden with agricultural products. These wagons were truly the “commercial life blood of the nation” until the 1850s.

A section of the museum was dedicated to gowns worn by various First Ladies. The piece de resistance was in the center - a very expensive and opulent inaugural ball gown worn by the current First Lady.

Taxidermed heroes on display included the decorated Stubby the dog who sniffed out mustard gas during WWI, Cher Ami, a carrier pigeon who flew missions and was wounded in WWI, and Winchester, General Philip Sheridan’s horse during the Civil War. General Sheridan had the horse stuffed and mounted when he died in 1878. Rienzi carried General Sheridan from Winchester, Virginia, to the battlefield of Cedar Creek. The General awakened his troops to repel a Confederate attack. Rienzi was renamed Winchester in memory of this victorious battle.

I was surprised to find that illegal voting and Reconquista were promoted back in the early 1970. A poster in Spanish said, “SIGAMOS LA CAUSA! Registrese Para Votar,” “FOLLOW THE CAUSE! Register to Vote.” In the middle of the poster, in smaller letters, the very racist phrase appears, “Viva la Raza,” “Long Live the Race.”

Illegal aliens want to break our voting laws by screaming discrimination and racism yet Mexico requires a voter ID card to show proof of citizenship in order to be allowed to vote. Democrats support La Raza’s effort since most illegals vote Democrat, strong believers in big government as a source of success and wellbeing.

Even the very liberal European Union requires proof of citizenship for voting. Yet our Supreme Court has struck down in a 7-2 decision the Arizona law that required proof of citizenship to vote. The federal government is no longer interested in enforcing immigration laws or checking if voters are American citizens. The traditional separation of powers is gone; everything is rubber-stamped according to the decisions of the federal bureaucratic elite in power.

An interesting document dated March 1, 1929, The Ohio Schoolmasters Club, quoted a British observer of Education in the U.S., “The American Schoolmaster will soon be as extinct as the American Bison.” This statement did not miss its mark by much since education is run now by the progressive Department of Education; the schoolmaster is just a head and the mastery involves the progressive platform.

The percentage of male teachers in the U.S. of that time showed an interesting down-spiraling trend - perhaps men were busy fighting wars.

1880 …. 43%
1890 …. 35%
1900 …. 30%
1910 …. 21%
1920 …. 14%
1921 …. 11%
1930 …. ??

ABC News reported in 2008 that the number of male teachers “keeps shrinking, citing reasons such as parent bias, fear of abuse allegations, and low pay. http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Parenting/story?id=6070282&page=1#.UcML8YzD_mI

The current female-dominated trend in the teaching profession explains the obvious; most of the socialist indoctrination that occurs in public schools has been and is done by female teachers and by progressives who write textbooks that alter historical fact, promoting their version of revisionist history.

The most favorite section of the museum with male visitors was “The Price of Freedom – Americans at War.” World War II massive war materiel overwhelmed the Axis enemies, and it would certainly have made the industrial military complex proud today. But the war was a just one then, and America, with the help of its allies, restored freedom to the entire European continent.

-         324,000 aircraft

-         88,000 tanks

-         8,800 warships

-         5,600 merchant ships

-         224,000 pieces of artillery

-         2,382,000 trucks

-         79,000 landing craft

-         2,600,000 machine guns

-         15,000,000 guns

-         20,800,000 helmets

-         41,000,000,000 rounds of ammunition (Numbers from the 1995 Oxford Companion to World War II and The 1993 World War II Databook)

From the Cold War section of the museum, a chunk of the Berlin Wall, the Wall of Shame, bears witness to the evil tyranny of communism. This wall was built in 1961 to separate the Communist section of East Berlin from the free West Berlin section. For ninety-six miles within the city, “concrete slabs, wire-mesh fences, barbed wire, trenches, dog runs, watchtowers, and searchlights” separated brutal oppression from freedom.

On November 9, 1989, eager German family members who wanted to be reunited with their loved ones, climbed the wall and started to chisel and hammer chunks out of the wall. It was so strongly built, only bulldozers could take it down, a symbol of the heavily entrenched and cemented communism.

President Reagan’s words in 1987 became prophetic, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” By 1991 the Soviet Union had broken up into independent nations, the “evil empire” was no more. However, the ideology of the evil empire, communism, is very much alive. With its oppressive iron curtain, it has morphed into the hearts and minds of very young Europeans yearning for the promised utopia, and the disease has spread across the ocean.

The Spotsylvania Tree Stump was a remnant of a stately oak tree shading a meadow outside Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, and witness to a bloody battle between 1,200 Confederates of Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and 5,000 Union troops from the Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac.  The peaceful meadow became known twenty-four hours later as the Bloody Angle. The same bullets that killed 2,000 combatants of this Civil War battle reduced the majestic oak to a twenty-two inch stump.

A special dark room was dedicated to a huge American flag, 30 by 34 feet, which was raised over Baltimore’s Fort McHenry on September 14, 1814 and inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Made of wool bunting with cotton stars  by Mary Pickersgill of Baltimore (a professional flag maker) in the summer of 1813, the famous flag has 15 stars and 15 stripes, the official U.S. flag from 1795-1818, It was originally 30 by 42 feet – one star and other pieces were cut out as “patriotic keepsakes” in the 1800s. Mary was helped by four teenagers, her daughter, two nieces, and an African American indentured servant, who stitched together the “broad stripes and bright stars.”

Our flag today is often disrespected by being sold as door mats, underwear, shoes, hats, t-shirts; worse yet, Americans and enemies alike burn our flag to show hatred and contempt for America. Soldiers who have fought to preserve our flag and freedom must be turning in their blood-soaked graves.

The song that became our national anthem in 1931 by Congressional decree was sung at all public ceremonies since Francis Scott Key wrote the words to fit the melody of “To Anacreon in Heaven,” an 18th century British song. It raised the spirits of our nation during the War of 1812 and during the Civil War, gaining more popularity each year. Today many performers alter and dishonor the anthem in the name of misguided artistic expression.

Leaving the museum, I found at 601 Pennsylvania Avenue, a plaque which claims to be the spot where in 1814 “The Star Spangled Banner” was first sung in public.

As an economist and teacher, my favorite parts of the museum were those dedicated to technology and currency.

Various steam engines, locomotives, tractors, motorized wagons, first cars, electric cars, buses, boats, station wagons, delivery trucks, elevators, gas pumps, electric pumps, and other motorized items described our technological history in motion.

An original Pennsylvania Turnpike plaza sign described our first long distance superhighway which opened on October 1, 1940 stretching 160 miles from Carlisle to Irwin.

The 1904 Columbia Runabout was the “bestselling car in the United States in 1900 and the first to exceed 1,000 sales.” The Runabout pictured was driven by John Oscar Skinner, superintendent of the Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C. until 1932. Wealthy urbanites bought electric cars because battery maintenance was complicated, recharging a battery was not possible in the rural areas, electric rates were high, and mileage between recharges was very low.

The electric car was revived in the 1990s by the California zero-emissions initiative and specs have improved somewhat. Electricity rates are still high, electricity is still produced with coal (49%), batteries are better, mileage between recharges is still low, the 6 recharge stations at the mall in Crystal City are always empty, and very expensive models brick themselves when they run out of charge and must be re-tooled at the factory for the whopping price of $40,000.

Route 66, dubbed the “People’s Highway,” affected American lives in many ways. Route 66, commissioned in 1926, was fully paved by late 1930s. It ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. John Steinbeck called it the “Mother Road” in the Grapes of Wrath because it allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants affected by the Great Depression to travel to California seeking jobs and a better life. Route 66 gained so much fame, way beyond its utility as a trucking route. It became a road of hope and of starting over, hoping for a better, more successful life, running away from past troubles.

Americans used roads in the 1920-1940s to migrate to new places of employment, to earn a living on the road as salesmen, or by the side of the road running businesses, and to travel for pleasure, seeing the highway as a symbol of independence and freedom. The government built the highways but it was taxpayers who funded them, it was private businesses and entrepreneurs who made it possible as well by building gas stations, garages, and making tires and other car parts.

How easy will it be to pluck Americans from their beloved roads in order to satisfy the environmentalist agenda of sustainability, giving back paved roads to wildlife habitat, and regressing life to a time when humans could only go in their immediate surrounding area?

The road toll in human life began to mount. In 1913 more than 4,000 people died in car accidents. In the 1930s 30,000 people died in car related accidents. It was assumed that people’s behavior caused accidents and a massive campaign began, driven by safety advocates involving engineering, enforcement, and education – educating drivers and pedestrians, designing safer roads, and manufacturing safer automobiles. As we are driven into smaller and smaller cars such as the Smart Car, the environmentalist EPA agenda of saving the environment from car-made pollution is definitely more important than saving human lives.

Not surprising, the museum promotes the existence of scientifically not proven man-made global warming. “Since the 1960s, smog, greenhouse gases, global warming, and strained gas supplies have prompted a new look at electric cars.” There is certainly an abundance of gas in many discovered oil-shale reserves. The problem is that the EPA and the administration refuse to give permits for new drilling and the XL pipeline to bring gas from Canada. There are too many crony-capitalists who carry gasoline by rail who stand to be hurt financially by the approval of the XL pipeline.

An array of Watt-hour meters on display from the 1890s by Thomson, Sangamo, Westinghouse, and Stanley, still operational, measured the amount of electrical energy consumed. Cheap and reliable, valued now at as little as $2, traditional meters are being  replaced by their very expensive new cousin, the Smart Meter, sold for around $150, so smart that the digital readout fries in the intense sun after three years, requiring another expensive replacement. The Environmentalist agenda requires and demands the Smart Meters and the interconnected smart grid, a sitting duck to solar flares, cyber-attacks, and spying by government, individual hackers, and companies who pay for “consumer data mining.”

The last interesting section of the National Museum of American History was the money exhibit. Kings and queens have put their images with messages of patriotism, prosperity, and power on coins and paper money. The Shilling (Mary and Phillip II of Spain, 1955), the Ruble (Catherine II, 1762), Byzantine Empire Solidus (Constantine VI and Irene, 780), England 5 pounds (Queen Victoria, 1887), Egypt 80 Drachms (Cleopatra VII, 51-30 BC) are such examples.

Colonists circulated and accepted foreign coins, some reluctantly, such as the Rosa Americana Penny from England (1723). The England Shilling (1676) and Farthing (1614-1625), Peru’s 8 Reales (1756) and 8 Escudos (1699), Brazil’s 12,800 Reis (1730), Mexico’s 2 Escudos (1714), Mexico’s 2 Reales (1621-1665), Mexico Real (1540), France 2 Louis D’or (1710) were examples of foreign coins circulated by colonists.

Because precious metals were not readily available to colonists, the first coins struck in English North America (1607-1765) used silver from the melting down of foreign coins and inscribing them NE (New England) with its minting origin in Massachusetts – the Shilling (1652), the Oak Tree Shilling (1660-1667), the Willow Tree Shilling (1653-1660), and the Pine Tree Shilling (1667-1674).

Colonists also bartered and used local money such as wampum shells, ten-penny nails, and tobacco. Different cultures and areas used strange artifacts as money. Malaysia used the Kedah “Rooster” in the18th century. The Chinese Turkistan used Brick Tea Money in the 19th century. Russia used Blue Glass Trade Beads in the 19th century. Belgian Congo used Katanga Cross about 1900. Pismo Beach, California used Clamshell scrips worth a dollar in 1933. During the Great Depression in 1933, some communities only circulated the clamshell which was worth one dollar.

The gold rush of 1825-1875 in the southeast (Carolinas and Georgia), California in 1848, and across the west furnished private minters with the raw material to make the first coins. The government eventually took over. Gold coins of one, twenty, and fifty dollars appeared.

After so many robberies, killings over gold, and the shaving of coin edges for gold dust, miners realized that paper money was safer. Images of the wild-west appeared on the first paper money. Private banks printed their own money to serve the surrounding community.

The very first federal twenty-dollar coin minted in 1849, known as the double eagle, is considered to be the most historically significant. In early 1933, 400,000 double eagles were minted. When America went off the gold standard, all but twenty coins survived the ordered melting. Of the 18,000 five-dollar gold pieces produced in 1822 by the Mint, all but three were melted down.

Today’s dollar, the “world’s reserve currency” and “petrodollar,” is not backed by anything anymore, not even the full “faith and credit” in our government. The Fed keeps printing/creating $85 billion each month until such time that the Chairman of the Reserve Board decides that the unemployment rate has magically hit 6.5 percent. There is Santa Claus for the very rich and the 47 percent “poor” who pay no taxes. For the rest of us, there is the IRS Scrooge.

I can honestly say that I learned more from artifacts in one day at the National Museum of American History than I was taught an entire semester of American (revisionist) History class in college.
